About the Tufts Kinsmen book
The Tufts Kinsmen Association would like to present Tufts Kinsmen Volumes I and II by Herbert Freeman Adams available for purchase.
Tufts Kinsmen is the genealogy of the family of Peter Tufts who came from Norfolk County, England to Charlestown, Massachusetts before 1638. Herbert Adams, The Tufts genealogist, worked for close to fifty years on this genealogy but sadly passed away in 2003, before publishing his work. Publication was subsequently taken over by members of The Tufts Kinsmen Association who had worked with Mr. Adams.
After minor corrections and editing for spelling, Volume I, Generations 1-6, was indexed and published in 2010 honoring the format Mr. Adams intended. The same methods were followed for Volume II – Generations 7 & 8, which was published in 2013. Children’s names of Generation 9 are included in Volume II, but without their vital statistics.
These volumes are substantive genealogies with full family listings and detailed stories of significant families. A large section of the beginning of the book is dedicated to previous genealogies, history of the name Tufts, origins in England, and the probable origin of Peter Tufts.
Each family entry lists their vital statistics, male ancestors back to Peter Tufts, and lists of additional family members. This listing of the infamous Henry Tufts family is an example.
The story of Henry Tufts continues for a full page in this listing, detailing his children and a story of his life. It is quite a story.
Daughters’ families list their children and spouses and any other significant information. The following example is from the Foss family of Greenland, NH.
(Note: If anyone knows the whereabouts of the portrait of Thomas Tufts listed above or his communion service, please let us know. His grave may be in Greenland as well. The Tufts-Pickering house operated as a bed and breakfast once but is now closed.)
